Stop acting like little children.

The American Family Association is acting just like the “family” part of their name - and in this case they are acting like the stubborn little brat who can’t get their way.

They are now calling for the Impeachment of Judge Vaughn Walker, because of his ruling against the constitutionality of Proposition 8 in the state of California, which defined marriage as being between a man and a woman.

Their basis for impeachment, that Judge Walker is a homosexual, is grounds that he should have recused himself of the case.

Hold on a second. The entire premise of this case was to define marriage as being between a man and a woman, otherwise known as a heterosexual relationship, right? So for the logic of the AFA to pass muster, wouldn’t a heterosexual judge be the one that would need to recuse himself of the case? For that matter - any judge that has a defined sexuality should recuse themselves from the case.

The AFA is obviously grasping for straws. The defendants in the case admittedly had no legal or statistically-backed reason for limiting marriage between a man and a woman. They admitted they had no ground to stand on past a moral objection amongst religiously-motivated individuals. They expected to lose the case, and instead of blaming themselves on their flawed logic they are now blaming the system.

I ask this to the AFA: show me the legal precedent for denying rights to gays and lesbians. That’s exactly what judge Walker asked not only of you, but also of the prosecution. Show the legal (not moral) reasoning behind denying rights to gays and lesbians. (The answer, of course, is there is none).

We as a nation cannot live our lives and create our laws based solely on morality. People of different religious, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds have very different ideals about what is moral and what is right - and it is within our rights as free citizens to live our lives according to those morals as long as we do not infringe on the rights of others. The AFA is using the excuse that gay marriage infringes on their rights - and after repeated requests to prove harm in countless Q&A’s, examinations and court cases they have yet been unable to substantially do just that without using self-funded and scientifically flawed research.

It’s high time the AFA shines that bright burning light of immorality back on themselves and realizes that lying, hateful speech, segregationalist attitudes and public rhetoric are the real immoralities in this story. The truth is that limiting marriage to being between a man and a woman does not solve any problems in our troubled nation - and instead is creates many, many more problems. It bogs down our justice system, it costs our taxpayers money, it infringes on the livelihood of countless same-sex couples and their families, and it takes resources away from causes that really could use the help, money and resources.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Just take a look back in history at the many campaigns that have attempted to keep the minority separate and unequal - women’s rights, slavery, interracial marriage and many more, and you will see why this is a bad idea. It has been proven by history that attempts to group people together and deny them rights will never work out in the end. It has been proven by history that the religious forces behind these attacks are always doing so under the name and the guise of doing God’s work, with nothing more to back it up than “because we say so.”

To the American Family Association, their followers, and anyone else perpetuating the rhetoric against the gay community I ask this: look into your heart. Go back and read the OTHER verses in the bible that call for love, acceptance of your neighbor and walking the path of Christ - and you will see clearly the harm present in this situation is not yours - it is ours. You are CAUSING harm against the gay community. In the end, that is the most un-Christian thing you can possibly do.

You truly are acting like the little child who has not gotten his way, who will go to every extreme to make a point even though he knows he is wrong. It’s high time you stop throwing your tantrum and go back to playing nice with ALL the kids in the sandbox.
